What are my passenger rights in New York City taxis?
Passengers in New York City taxis have the right to safe, non-discriminatory service, transparent metered fares, and licensed drivers. All Green Cabs and Yellow Cabs are regulated by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), which sets rules for pricing, conduct, and passenger protection.
Can Green Cabs refuse to take me to my destination?
No. Green Cabs may not refuse passengers based on destination, short trip distance, payment method, or personal characteristics. Refusals are only permitted for safety reasons, vehicle capacity limits, or destinations outside legal service areas.
Where can Green Cabs pick up passengers in NYC?
Green Cabs may pick up street hails in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Upper Manhattan. They are not permitted to pick up passengers in Midtown or Downtown Manhattan, but they may drop off passengers anywhere in New York City.
Do Green Cabs have to use a meter?
Yes. All Green Cabs must use the official NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission taximeter. Flat-rate or negotiated fares are not allowed, except for officially approved airport flat fares where applicable.
Do Green Cabs accept credit cards and cash?
Yes. Green Cabs are required to accept cash, credit cards, debit cards, and electronic payment methods. Drivers may not demand cash-only payment.
Can Green Cabs charge extra for luggage?
No. Green Cabs may not charge additional fees for luggage as long as it fits safely inside the vehicle.
